The Divine Vine Tapes (vol.1)
self-released; 2013

3.5 out of 5

I think I might throw a party and play mostly John Mayer, Beyonce and a couple of songs from The Divine Vine Tapes by AK.CHAMEL. I just want to see people’s reactions and snap a photo so these guys can use it as their next album cover. One thing I can say about this album is that I haven’t heard music this original in a long time. As dissonant and as unmusical as it can be at times, if you are a music fan who embraces unique sounds and structure then you need to listen to this one.

A song like “Hoodoo Blood Lore” which contains an out of tune guitar and various moans that totally creeped me out. “El Curandero” (native Ghost Chant) sounds like a chant you would hear in Bali. It features a wooden flute, chants, and bongos.  “Infierno Verde” has various manipulated voices that would instantly cause Justin Bieber fan’s heads to explode.
The closing number “Rebirth” reminded me of what I would be listening to if I visited a place called “Skull Island” and decided to worship an over-sized ape. This album won’t be in the top forty anytime soon but I don’t think these guys really care about that.

When did music become an industry? This record throws a wrench into the machine. It's a breath of fetid air, and I mean that in the best way possible when the radio reeks of squeaky clean urinal cakes.
