Chloride Soul is a one-man band from the Lake District in West England. He is a dry stonewalling day trader who found a cave and decided to produce the tracks found on Spider In The Wingmirror there. The songs blend melodic vocal melodies with guitar on these almost completely percussion free songs.
Starting off Spider In A Wingmirror is, “This Is Our Year.” An uplifting melody that really brings life to the album. The lyrics follow a normalized type of every day scene of personal endeavors. A song that resonates a truly deeper meaning once it starts to seep in.
Up next is "In a car" which is built upon a couple of different guitar patterns. He plays into a folk vibe that felt a little on the darker side and really appreciated the vocals on this track.
Coming to song number five, “Climb The Wall” touches upon the theme of watching the days slowly fade away. There is a good amount of melancholy that makes the song work. It was something I could imagine throwing on during a low or depressed mood to provide solace.
The only percussion used on Spider In The Wingmirror was from hitting a canoe for the bass drum, and then a sampling of hitting an aluminum grain store. I believe this can be heard on the instrumental song "She Was" and possibly other tracks as well.
One of the highlights was "The rain" which is wrapped in subtlety and nuance. There are shades of emotion such as melancholy and hope which give the song a warm glow. "Here Today" is another standout that is a largely instrumental piece that displays his creativity on guitar that goes past the seven minute mark.
Chloride Soul recorded most of Spider In The Wingmirror using GarageBand on an iPhone 4S. Prior to recording Chloride Soul hadn’t owned a smartphone and purchased one just to obtain GarageBand. The results are a little better then what you expect. I can't say the audio quality comes close to a professional studio but the lo-fi aesthetics work at times.
Spider In The Wingmirror contains well delivered folks songs which display a good amount of emotional depth. Recommended.
