Patrick Browning strives to produce his music with affordable equipment from his own studio, straying from the so-called "studio standards" that are now dominating the market, in order to use his creativity and skills to get the best out of his resources, instruments and recording gear. His music is based on analog beats and melodies, inspired by artists such as Boards Of Canada, The Album Leaf or Mum, just to name a few similar sounds. His project Drosera delivers haunting landscapes that rely almost exclusively on synthesizers and drum machines, creating atmospheres that sit somewhere in between the 70’s experimental electronic music scene and the noughties post-punk (just replace the guitar with a synth, but you definitely have the full melodic and emotional spectrum of the genre right here). The record was entirely self-produced, and sequenced live using an Alesis MMT-8.
So one thing you shouldn’t try and do is pronounce the names of these songs. The second song “uijq” sounds like an orgy of robots working in an industrial factory in the year 3033. He does what Boards of Canada perfected by creating warm, distant overtones and place the beat center stage. Some vocal samples start to drop half way through and you start to realize this song is quite the mammoth. Ok so what else have you got? Well there’s a nice number that rolls off your tongue entitled “808pqd6.” The songs are just as hard to say as the songs by Aphex Twin but the tunes are golden. This one is a winner too. No doubt this is really well made electronic music. This song has so much going on and the programming is money–yes it’s money. What’s the final verdict? This is complex, intricate electronic music that not anyone can create. This is an electronic musician who knows what it’s all about.
