Kenny Olivers grew up on a steady diet of English bands like The Rolling Stones and The Smiths. It’s not particularly surprising his released album You Don't Deserve It is unequivocally English sounding. The music takes the fun part of rock and presents you with nine songs.
“You Found Love” is the opener and arguably the catchiest song on the album. The song unloads a good amount of rock 101 type moves with no problem. It feels loose, fun and memorable.
Up next is “But Really” which starts with rumbling toms, shimmering cymbals and atmospheric pads before bursting into the verse with kinetic, jangly guitar progression and lyrics about decadence and a lonely heart.
“Chiara” is another winner which was easy to appreciate. The Keith Richards style guitar was on point. “My Girl” veered a little more towards The Smiths while “Didn't Wanna Go Back” was a certified highlight that has one of the catchiest choruses.
“/// ////” seemed like an unnecessary filler before getting back into songs like “All My Clothes Look Better on You,” “Can't Beat Your Heart” and the impressive closer “Don't Come Round Here No More.”
You Don't Deserve It is the type of album that doesn't’ need much explanation. Olivers isn’t attempting new techniques, isn’t genre bending and well just paying homage to a litany of artists. Luckily, this is homage that does it justice and is backed by well written songs and solid performances. Recommended.
