Nick Murray is a songwriter from Minneapolis who recently released his first EP entitled Island. Murray works as a chef for his day job but it was obvious to me he spends a good amount of time making music as well.
The first thing that stuck out to me were the vocals. I found his voice to be comforting and easy on the ears. There were a number of times I thought he sounded similar to Father John Misty.
He opens with the title track which starts with some soft strumming and vocals. The song begins to add other elements. An additional guitar is introduced and when the drums come into the mix it adds some emotional weight to the song. As the song progresses it gets more and more epic and huge sounding. Great opener.
A similar structure happens with the song “Room For Breathing” as it slowly builds towards a crescendo. That being said the hooks and vocal melodies are memorable and catchy. “Alice” shows a little more restraint. Murray keeps the song soft and delicate all the way through. There is a warm melancholy that provides solace throughout the whole track.
“Honeybee” is arguably the highlight and was the most original sounding song on the EP. I think that might have been a bassoon in there but it works wonders. The horns are fantastic. The song has a little bit of hop to it even though it feels subdued and subtle. He ends with “Stones in The River” which is upbeat, fun Americana. It’s a joyous sing-a-long that ends the EP with a positive vibe.
If Murray is half as good a cook as he is a musician his food must be delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed this EP which displays his diversity while building a foundation. Highly recommended.
