Sergio Rodriguez (vocals/guitar), Derrick Harris (drums), Wesley Arocho (lead guitar) and Frank Stewart (bass) are Pucusana. The band that formed in 2016 just released their fantastic sophomore effort entitled Nothing New.
It's one of those albums that is a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end. The songs are consistently enjoyable and the band has undeniable chemistry. They know how to work off each and no one is trying to outdo each other. There have an indie rock type vibe that I think will jive with fans of bands like Local Natives, Vampire Weekend and Grizzly Bear. The hooks unveiled themselves after one listen on most songs and didn’t require multiple listens to really get into the songs.
The band kicks things off with “Misery Is Drastic” which gives you a good idea of what to expect. They launch into a riff that reminded me of the Beatles song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” but the mood definitely has a more contemporary vibe. I was immediately attracted to the vocals of Rodriguez. His vocals are well delivered throughout the album which fits with the style of music.
Up next is “Weak And Alone” which is an upbeat and jovial song that gets in and out quickly. It has a surf rock vibe and is immediately infectious. The easy to appreciate musicality continues with “We Are Not Doing Great” and “Addicted To You.” The closing title track was perhaps the highlight. There is the perfect amount of emotion without getting saccharine.
This is a great example of a band that understands the importance of having a cohesive sound. They built a foundation and the album is greater than the sum of its parts because of it. My only concern for the band is that they may be hitting that “indie” vibe a little too much on the nose.
Overall, this is a great album that contains impressive performances and songwriting with the ability to make the experience of listening from beginning to end a seamless experience.
