Spencer Joyce is a solo artist based out of Annapolis, MD who started performing some time in 2013. Since then he has come a long way to release a five-song EP entitled Bad Joker Face. His song on this EP mix elements of pop, folk and rock. The songs are well written and catchy.
Joyce went to a pro studio and because of that the quality is exceptional and is competitive with commercial releases,
Up first is “Shine My Light” which is a forward moving song with a good amount of energy. It’s a fairly standard pop song in terms of structure with a more subdued verse and a rocking chorus. His delivery is top notch in all areas. I was excited to hear what else he had.
“High Class Girl” is more or less pure pop. It has a by the beach feeling with good vibes and infectious melodies. He sings about a classic boy meets a high class story. “Elephant In a Jar” is another solid song that has hints of bands like Coldplay and a classic singer/story appeal. His vocals really shine here and it is certainly one I think the ladies might swoon over.
Joyce rocks out again with a distorted guitar and pounding drums on “The Freak Show” while “Dear Lexi” is jangly, pop song that is just as catchy as any of the songs that came before. Joyce is a talented musician and I feel like he has grown a lot since the demos he recorded on his iPhone. It’s always satisfying to hear a musician come into his own and develop their sound.
Overall, Bad Joker Face is an enjoyable pop album. It didn’t throw me any curveballs and isn’t experimental but I was ok with that because of the delivery and songwriting. Recommended.
