Kimber Dulin (vocals), Chris Tremoglie (guitar) and Zach Rinch (bass) are 49 Burning Condors. The band released a self-titled four-song EP 49 Burning Condors. They play dark country folk that sounds like it comes from the swamp of the Mississippi and would sound perfectly placed in the first season of True Detective.
The open with “Rosaleen’ which is a slow burn and the arguable highlight. It starts off with acoustic guitar and the dark but captivating vocals of Dulin. There is an energy that starts to brew with the vocals becoming brighter and more powerful. This buildup of energy is somewhat perfectly interrupted by slide guitar but then around the two-and-a-half-minute mark the vocals absolutely soar.
“Troubles Ahead’ is still delightfully dark and gothic but there are so many more percussive aspects like a kick drum. The guitar is wicked fast and the chorus is infectious and memorable. I have to mention the just completely badass guitar playing towards the end of the song.
“Black Creek Waltz” which is just an amazing title for a song continues to establish this foundation. The song has a sing along type country melodies with brief instrumental sections that are vibrant but sound like they are coming from a ghostly forest instead of a sunny meadow.
Last up is the haunting piano/harpsichord led “Pennies.” It has a romantic classical feel on top of the gothic folk vibe and when the orchestral violin comes in it couldn't have sounded more perfect.
I love this sound but it’s so rare and far in between that I hear any bands doing anything like this. 49 Burning Condors don’t only play into a very unique niche but this is one of the best takes I have heard on it. It’s dark, beautiful, haunting and one of the most impressive releases I have heard this year. Highly recommended.
