A Bloodbath Ensues is a one-man band. Introspective thoughts and a shy tendency can be a curse for those dreaming of performing live, but also a blessing when it comes to the art of recording beautiful, well-sketched music. A Bloodbath Ensues was born in San Diego and currently lives in the Kansas City Metro area. He records for himself, but he does not need to fear the thoughts of others. His latest album entitled Altruistically Self-Serving is gorgeous instrumental bliss.

‘It is Decided’ is a symphony of epic and timid proportions all at the same time. Much like the internal feelings of A Bloodbath Ensues, this is raw talent with a hint of self-reservation. Carefully-picked notes and soft, clean, guitar melodies occasionally descend into aggressive, distorted, electric chaos.

But it is the gentler, tranquil moments of this album in which A Bloodbath Ensues really excels. “Suppression” is the greatest culmination of all to which A Bloodbath Ensues strives. Tinkering and fluttering between reverberating guitar notes, as they echo into the endless atmospheric oblivion created on Altruistically Self-Serving, this music feels perfectly tuned and executed.

“Alan Six” is another track which showcases the extraordinary talent of A Bloodbath Ensues. Precise drums and distant surf-guitar arpeggios echo through a dark and restrained atmosphere, gradually growing towards a dissonant and distorted guitar riff. The beat builds with a pulsating urgency and I can almost taste the coming tidal wave of noise. I’m correct, but my expectations are exceeded. A throbbing bass drum and endlessly looping guitars suddenly break free and explode into ricocheting, crunchy, choppy guitars and a slick solo which smoothly overlaps the mix.

All in all, A Bloodbath Ensues has a lot to offer and perhaps a lot to learn when it comes to self-belief. When he lets go and trusts in his own abilities, he truly creates his best music. I have a feeling he could push himself to even dizzier heights if he gains confidence in his abilities.
