Day / Break
self-released; 2014

3.5 out of 5

By Eva Cantillo

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, American-born Adam Watkins releases his first debut solo album titled Day / Break. The four songs within it have been written throughout the past year and recorded in a local church studio. Music style can be classified as something like faithful folk, or indie Christian rock. You can definitely hear Watkins’s southern Virginia roots peaking out of his natural, organic and humble melodies.

The opening song on the EP titled “Day,” has quite a triumphant persona to it, one that I can imagine filling an entire room and penetrating every single person within it in a positive and uplifting way. It has an infectious and incredibly vibrant virtue and listening just makes me feel inspired and willing and able to accomplish my dreams. Yet ironically, the song is about death and rising from the darkness; “The grave has swallowed me whole and death has taken it’s toll, but I will rise with the sun and come alive.”

The next song is slower and more meticulous in its delivery. Again, the lyrics are heavy and by this time we realize Watkins’ knack for great songwriting. “There is a flood that runs through my veins… There is a fire that burns in my chest…. And raises the dead.” Toward the end of the song, there is almost an epiphany-like closing as the music grows in speed and breath and just like the lyrics state; it “brings in new life.”

Watkins’ music is pure in nature and every song serves its life lessons along with a spoonful of fresh honey. The songs are smooth and uplifting and are closer to indie folk songs rather than Christian rock. They can be easily enjoyed by anyone regardless of religious preference because the music speaks of simple topics and delivers them in a beautiful and well-composed package that is Day /Break.
