Alas, The Pacific is a two-piece band comprised of Josh Lewis (guitar/vocals) and Jesse Larson (drums) from. The band hasn't been around that long and still seem to be establishing their sound. The band plays basic fuzzy rock that had a resurgence back over fifteen years ago and has been emulated by countless bands ever since. Alas, The Pacific falls somewhere between The White Stripes, Artic Monkeys and The Black Keys.
The album Fools on Parade is made up of fuzzy guitars, vocals and heavy-hitting drums. Their isn’t too much deviation from that. They lay the groundwork with “Out of Mind” which starts off with root notes and solid drum work. It’s basic, predictable but still good fun. Better production would have definitely helped with the dynamics and I felt a bass guitar would have added frequencies which felt needed at times. Variations of the same sound continue forward with “My Friend,” “Irresponsible” and “Wild One.” - loud raucous rock that feel cathartic. The energy changes slightly when they get to “Reckless Man” which is a slower blues jams. There are times when the band gets off key but quickly recovers. “Beauty Bite Me (Goodbye)” takes off distortion and has a ’50s pop feel. Unfortunately the recording quality takes away from the impact. The guitar sounds as if if is in a different room and didn’t pick up the necessary frequencies. They close with three high energy, rocking songs that are similar to what the band started with. Alas, The Pacific has a sound that is quite common amongst a lot of bands and at this point there isn’t too much that separates them from the saturated sea. They have some talent but are really going to have push their creativity to bring something to the table that doesn’t feel so familiar on a number of different levels.
