self-released; 2015

3.4 out of 5

By Megan Gazzo

Inertia brought to us by Alcohol Cottonball is a one-man wonder that is pleasurable and fun. The first song “Yacht Club” dances around the high octaves and is filled with joy and light. Mostly a looped jam session with his own self, the album is impressive. The build up of the drums and guitar combination is wicked on point. He is skilled in both arenas to a maximum level.

The steady drum beat and guitar combination shoots you off into another universe. It feels like running through the forest on soft moss in the summer time. It feels light, flow-y and free like a large piece of soft fabric rippling in the warm wind. It is jazzy and jammy and brings a sense of completion. The songs are comfortable and supportive to the soul.

The song “Fundamentals of Engineering” is quite Flaming Lips-esque. It sounds like psychedelic jazz graced by the presence of the beautifully constructed voice of master himself.  The lyrics, “This cracked out generation, work hard just to get wasted all the time, drink until your minds gone a hundred miles from home, and wonder why you’re all alone” brings light to the topic of some issues we have in today’s society.

People do work their selves to the bare bone, and then get over stressed and just drink the edge off. At the end of it, you have been just overworking and overdrinking. It is a pretty sad subject matter, but I must admit quite accurate. This man sounds like he has quite the grasp on every element of creating a really nice masterpiece, including the wisdom and foresight about life. He is a pro at every aspect.

The song “Sleep” is dreamy and ethereal, putting the listener’s brain into a meditative state. It is deeply relaxing and calming. The guitar strumming is subtle and concise. He uses a combination of brushes and sticks with the drums on this one. Those brushes give the sentiment of complete harmony and joy.

I love this album. It shows people how truly amazing humans are, and the incredible potential of a single human.
