Hans Schumacher (vocals/guitar), Lindsay Paine (guitar), Brenda Shepherd (bass/vocals) and Joel Arpin (drums) are American Pleasure Dome. The group from Minneapolis, Minnesota released their eponymous album American Pleasure Dome. Their music has roots in various sub-genres of rock from the last couple of decades but mostly about the last twenty years or so. They align with bands like The Wrens, Wilco and to a lesser extent the warm melancholy hum of a band like The National.
Their music doesn't seem concerned about finding textures and tones that haven’t been used before in the genre. On that note it’s the kind of production that may have first been established by artists like Tom Petty and John Mellencamp. It’s warm and screams Americana. I for one don’t mind this approach. Why try and fix something that isn’t broken?
The performance and songwriting was top notch in my opinion. I found this to be an extremely enjoyable ride starting with “Time Wave.” The music here is pretty straightforward consisting of a three-chord progression and driving 4/4 beat. It’s a catchy tune that felt like a backyard BBQ burner that sounds good in the summertime.
“Dark Side” was unequivocally one of the best songs on the album. It’s warm, subtle, infectious and also rocks out. It’s a repeat worthy song. Another killer track was “Saint Grumpy.” They find a wicked lead guitar tune and this song is straight alt-country. “Happy Pills” was a great name for the tune. The song is very joyful sounding and has this hypnotic quality to it that mimics a good feeling. As the album progressed “Siren's Island,” “Crazy Running Guy” and the closer “Sister Adelheid” were the tunes that stuck out to me.
American Pleasure Dome is just a good, no frills American band. It’s not much more complicated than that. Take a listen.
