3.7 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

Andrew Levin started his music career playing guitar for Terrance Martin, Zion I, Kev Choice, Emily Afton and many others. Like many others in his position you start to think about what else you want to do with music. In many cases it is to make their own music and that is exactly what Levin did. He recently released Spotless which is a diverse album merging plenty of different styles including electronic and rock.

The title track opens the EP where the initial electronic riff reminded me of the Bjork song “Human Behavior” and a couple of ’90s electronica acts. However the song goes in very different directions. The piano and vocals give the song a human element. Overall, it is pretty upbeat, funky, catchy and most of all just fun. There is a lot of ear candy on this song alone.

“Ocean” has a more mellow, R&B feel to it. There are some catchy hooks on this song along with some lead guitar solos.

“Never Leave” was a personal favorite. The song is very chill and just has a lot of separation between the elements. It’s lush and atmospheric. The songs ends with a piano solo. “Friday Night” has a funky vibe to it that felt a like bit too different coming off of “Ocean” to where it sounded like a completely different project. “July” is a spares song consisting of mostly his  guitar and vocals.

Levin certainly fuses together different genres however I didn’t feel as if he had an overall sound which defined him. Each song feels like its own Island and because of that felt like loosely related singles. The highlights were the title track and “Never Leave” to my ear although each song had something about it I enjoyed.

I liked this EP but I also look forward to seeing how Levin unifies his flirtations with different genres.
