Anthony Spirito is an artist from Southern California who recently released a four-song EP entitled My Own Sky. He writes acoustic based melancholy folk. He’s got a deep voice which spews emotion that I was most drawn to.
He opens with “My Own Sky” which is the highlight. It’s a deeply melancholy but moving piece. His guitar drips with reverb while some kind of effect trickles in the background. His vocals are barely above a whisper and serves the mood of the song very well. The next song “River No More” is at a significantly less volume which has to be mentioned. I was reading about Anthony Spirito and it said he is a tech geek. Apparently his four-song EP My Own Sky is a DIY production that was assembled with consumer gear. The result is not quite studio quality but the mixes are very impressive. That being said this EP is in desperate need of being mastered properly. The first song is a good 6 dbs to 8 dbs louder than the second song on the EP according to my Dorrough meter which is noticeable. “River No More” isn’t quite as melancholy as “My Own Sky.” In fact it mixes a hopeful, nostalgic vibe in there. Spirito also adds drums and guitars into the mix. “River No More” moves at a slow pace but somehow still manages to feel like it has a good energy. I think this is due in part to an emotionally resonant vocal performance. “East of Eden” is a very bright, atmospheric song. It also feels downright optimistic compared to the opener. Every song seems to be a little bit brighter and hopeful than its predecessor. Perhaps this was done on purpose. Although the closer “Your Crusade” is more thought provoking and reflective. As far as I’m concerned Spirito goes four for four. The only thing he needs to do is get this remastered and keep pushing out more material.

Thanks Ted & No More Division. Note to self: No multi-tasking when uploading EP's! I've since rectified the situation. More to come. Releasing one every 2/3 months over the next year. Here's link to listenable tracks...thanks again....
