self-released; 2014

3.6 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

Hailing from Arizona Atenesser is an experimental artist who has been producing music for the last five years. On his recent release Dreamless he makes music that often sounds like cyber-fueled alien techno that is coming from a different solar system. It’s instrumental music that has no time for lyrics and instead relies on ample amounts of sounds to keep your attention.

The first track “Dreamless” starts with a soft ominous pad to provide the atmosphere as a lead square-like synth provides the melody. The music starts to curdle before the extremely up front and center drums come into the mix. The kick is thick and occupies almost all of the low while synths sound as if they are tearing at the seams.

The second track “The Dark Crystal” is a thematic labyrinth of noise that sounds murky as if you are stepping into a swamp with infectious toads and other luring wildlife. The song has an ominous presence and might be appropriate to put on the next time  you decide  to build a haunted house. I constantly felt as if evil spirit was looking for my shoulder

“Cut that Nonsense” was the highlight for me as it was a kinetic song with a fast BPM that felt like something you would want to hear at the club at 2 o’clock in the morning. Atenesser multiple percussive elements to make i sound faster than it actually is. The music sounded somewhere between Aphex Twin and Burial.

Another dance track that will be sure to release a good amount of serotonin is the closer “Dance Shtick.” A constant steady kick drum lays down the sub frequencies while various lead synths and pads overlap. It's a hard hitting closer that robots or humans will good time dancing to.

Dreamless is a very solid release that will be enjoyed at the club or with a nice pair of headphones. It’s the kind of music that is best served loud.
