Before even listening to Reimagining Colour by Austin Dulaney, I was pretty sure I was in for something pretty epic based on the album cover. I was right but the epic qualities come in the style of metal and prog rock.
The album starts off with “Become This Way.” You are greeted with a bomb of distortion from a guitar and heavy hitting drums. The song starts to roll fast and with serious kinetic energy around the one-minute mark. That energy is more or less kept up the entire time. That being said it’s a dynamic ride with guitar solos, a catchy hook and an explosive outro.
Up next is “Visual Poetry” which is sort of an anti-love song in some sense about lies and betrayal. It deals with the darker side of love. The vocals are strong here as well as those onslaught of guitar licks.
“The Hands of Fate” has a stellar beginning. The guitar work has a slight classical feel but also felt a bit like something you might hear from a band like Metallica in the ’80s. At any rate the song eventually explodes in a fierce guitar solo before dwindling back down again. The song could very well be the highlight. It comes close to the seven-minute mark and is a roller coaster ride from beginning to end.
“Pulling Punches” actually doesn't feel like it is pulling punches at all. The song explodes out of the gate with intense guitar and pounding tom drums. It will get your adrenaline moving. “Reimagining Colour” is a slight breather at least for the first half. They close with “You Waste Your Time” which is another solid song that adds to their foundation.
Reimagining Colour is a cohesive listen from beginning to end. The production is really well done with top notch mixing. I did however notice a slight issues with the mastering. The first song for instance was noticeably louder then the second track.
Overall, fans of this type fast, energy fueled rock will not want to miss this. Take a listen.
