Baby Monday is a singer-songwriter based in Washington, D.C. who recently released her demo EP entitled Gazing Up. She mentions, “these songs were inspired by summers I spent in Florida as an awkward teen pining for love. Most are written about a fictional romance, an ideal companion I have in my head.” Her music seems to be in the embryonic stage but at the very least it gives us an idea of the style that we will most likely hear from her in the future.
The EP starts with "Just To Have You" which is one heck of a catchy pop song. It embraces 808 style drums which I'm not always a fan of but worked in this case. As the song progress synths, electric pianos and guitar are added but the vocals carry the song. The overlapping vocal harmonies are exceptional. My only minor qualm was the song felt like it needed more of a meaty hook. She sings, "just to have you" which works better towards the end of the song. Up next is “Likeness." Although the song is only two-minutes long the hook is strong and the vocals overall are memorable. I really enjoyed how smooth yet dynamic her vocals were. She closes with "Y Vos" which builds on a familiar palette of sounds. This song has the most instrumental parts especially during the chorus. I thought the synths were a little too low in the mix during the verse but the chorus is perfect. In fact I wish the chorus lasted longer. Gazing Up is around eight-minutes long and feels like an appetizer that left me wanting more. I thought the songs were compact and catchy but would have liked to have heard them a little more fleshed out with ideas. Hopefully Gazing Up is just the start for Baby Monday. I have a feeling her best work lies in the future. Perhaps we will hear a full-length soon.
