Ben & Kerry is a rock/pop duo from Atlanta, Georgia who has been playing music together in some capacity over the last ten years. Their latest DIY effort is Paleo and it contains three songs which showcase some of the band's talents.
The songs are pretty straightforward and don’t contain many surprises along the way. I thought the songs were catchy but I have to say a boost in the production and recording quality would have let me get in the groove of their rhythms a little bit more. They open with an upbeat, lively song entitled “Fooblime” which mixes ska and rock. The song revolves around basic chord progression and a steady drum beat. I was hoping for a couple more surprises along the way but wasn’t greeted with any. That being said the song is catchy and felt like a tune that would thrive best in a live environment. The second song “Mr. Chapman” has elements of blues and hard rock. The vibe does feel quite different from the first song. The lyrics deal with a gold digger who takes a man for all the money he has. “Mr. Chapman” follows a lot of tropes and doesn’t spew originally but again like the first song is fun to listen ti. They close with “Neverland” which is the longest song on the album and also has a more nostalgic and reflective vibe than the first two songs. I would argue this song is the highlight and also happens to have an ‘80s vibe in some ways. Ben & Kerry have some talent but may have to dig a bit deeper to compete with some of the best rock/pop bands of today. Paleo has three distinct songs, which didn’t give me a indication of what an album would be like with a defined sound. There are some inspired moments here but Ben & Kerry fall into a category of wait and see right now.
