Blue Herons is a project between John Walsh (guitar/bass/vocals) and Chris Dibiasio (drums). They recently released a three-song EP entitled Really Good People. It’s pretty simple music revolving around vocals, guitars, bass and drums. It does have an indie rock type vibe that is not too far off from sounding like a much more lo-fi version of Yo La Tengo or early Pavement.
They open with “Fate Is On The Ground” which contains jangle-y guitars, a walking bass line and solid drumming. It’s a catchy song and arguably the highlight but there are some minor issues. The most notable is the song gets off time. It’s most noticeable towards the beginning. One other thing is that they needed at least one more significant sounding change to justify it being a four-minute song. The initial riff doesn't change much and starts to get worn out by the three-minute mark. I liked the vocal melody and thought the lead guitar part was creative. “Really Good People” is another solid song. The guitar riff is inventive and the vocal melody is catchy. Once the song gets to the chorus the vocal for some reason gets very loud. Using a compressor or automaton here would have helped the jarring transition. They close with “The Writers” which gets most everything right. It’s a basic song all things considered but has good delivery and the most memorable chorus out of the three songs. Even though this short three song EP is far from perfect there is plenty of potential it showcases. The songs are well written and the delivery is mostly on point. There obviously isn't enough music here to get a complete picture of what this duo is capable of. On that point they fall into a case of wait and see.
