Precious You/Yellow Dog
self-released; 2015

3.6 out of 5

By Megan Gazzo

The song Precious You by Blupa Music is serene and glittery. “Precious You” brings forth a magical singing voice that sounds like infusions of a Neil Young influence. Vulnerability and transparency of his soulful emotions can be felt here. Acoustic rhythms with settling percussive instrumentation create a song that is effervescent yet soothing.

There is also a David Bowie Ground Control feeling with this song. His voice is in the forefront of the piece. Drums and guitar are clearly simply accompaniment to this sultry, nasally, sexy voice. The guitar is heavenly and angelic while lyrics sit deeply in the seat of soul hashing out relationship quandaries and the push and pull that is inevitable between two people.   He sings "sometimes I wake up in my dreams/nothing is ever what it seems/I lie in my bed with eyes wide/I maybe awake and I maybe dreaming still."

As we move through the EP Yellow Dog, you can feel irony and an indie rock, bluesy vibe. There is some alterations with different microphone filters giving the EP a more raspy sound. Some tracks feel like they are being recorded from inside the horn. Take for instance "Yellow Dog" where he sings "it's all about my baby/all about my baby blue." Is this a reference to Breaking Bad? I'm no sure. The song bleeds with guitars that slice an dice their way through the mix.

"Lovers of Eternity" is an infectious song which revolves around  some excellent horn works and themes of lost love. He sings "What ever happened to us/she cries raves eyes" and "We were just kids back then/lost in time and space."

Blupa Music is definitely something worth checking out. He has one of those voices that are unforgettable and addictive. Yellow Dog and Precious You  is well put together and the band creates the perfect launchpad for him to feel comfortable expressing his innermost emotions with confidence. Nordic countries always provide such a dream/space time continuum that leaves us listeners floating in an ethereal cozy, fuzzy place.  Blupa Music, being from Norway, helps us go there.  His voice is iconic and will leave a stamp on your soul. Great for any occasion especially a beach picnic.
