Bone and Marrow are Daimon Santa Maria (guitar/keyboard/synth/piano/sitar/drum samples/drums/flute/vocals) and Jennifer Santa Maria (bass guitar/percussion/vocals). The band isn’t your ordinary garage rock band with guitar, vocals and drums but their music often sounds just as immediate. Electronic flirtations, along with tasteful use of instruments like a flute make for an original sounding band on their release Introspectator.
Those birds chirping aren't coming from outside your window but begin “Defense Mechanism.” Sheets of white noise are made from the guitar but I was deceived into thinking this song might not rock. The song gets moving shortly and I was instantly enjoying the vocals. Jennifer Santa Maria sounds powerful, free and confident when she sings. I couldn't but help think of Grace Slick. Then once the flute comes in I couldn't help but think of Jethro Tull. Yes the grooves get psychedelic. It was a great opener and I was equally impressed with “Tiny Mirrors.” The song rocks out with electronic percussion which completely fits the bill for some reason. The song just slays it with emotionally powerful vocals. They slow things down a wee bit with “Building the Nerve.” No complaints, Here vocals shine and the song is emotionally resonant. Some more rocking ensues with “Search Engine” and “Magic Numbers.” Don’t miss some of the best flute action on “Foot Prince and the Royal Wonder.” They save their opus entitled “Motherland” for last. The ten-minute song is hypnotic and psychedelic in an Acid Mother Temple kind of way. It is also really catchy. A good way to end. This is a great album. More proof that you don’t need a lot of people to rock.
