Broad & Narrow is your new-age connection between country and swing rock. The sounds that this band from Ontario, Canada brings are upbeat, enlightening and have a solid rock background to keep the listeners tuned in and jamming. Made up of two independent artists, Brent and Nate, Broad & Narrow embodies a new take on honest and pure uplifting folk rock music.
The opening track “That Ain’t Love” is a lovely and lively tune about a relationship based around an illusion of love, but lack there of, “I think of a hundred reasons why I need you, but none of them can make me stay.” From the start, the track has a hypnotic step melody that seems to go on and after time, becomes very catchy. The chorus “and that ain’t love” is anchored by a guitar that goes on a solo and gives some really great rock notes to the track. The lyrics illustrate a beautiful story turned dark in the light of truth; “And if you want to make believe, I can’t fabricate a fantasy so deep… that ain’t love.”
The next track on the album “Dear Departed” is nowhere near as upbeat, but is just as striking and compelling through Broad & Narrow’s lyrics and emotional demeanor. It starts off with a slow and melting guitar melody that introduces the lyrics “I know I’m not the only one who hates this situation.” As the song continues, the listener learns the song is about loss and the process of grieving; “Sticks and stones will break my bones, your words forever haunt me.” The song flows along very organically and gives a huge invitation to join in and sing along, as it is quite catchy. Despite the darkness of the main theme, the song is very positive, uplifting and has a beautiful romantic air to it that makes it pleasing to listen to.
We Saw This Coming is a great listening album with passion and musical drive from two young musicians. Things that could be improved are the quality of the recording; at times the sounds and vocals are a bit rough and muzzled. Besides these trials that are true with many emerging artists, this album is a success for both the creators and the audience.
