Colin Cross and Philip Basnight are the duo that make up Broke Royals. They recently released a pop EP entitled The Luxury of Time Pt. III. The EP contains five songs all of which are radio friendly and are much more apt to reside in the mainstream. All of the songs are clean with crisp production that is easy on the ears, hooks which you can hear the first time you listen to a song and basic 4/4 timing which are easy to bop you head to.
The band opens with the cover “On My Way” which is perhaps the most single worthy of the bunch. It contains the grandiose, hopeful vibe that you can hear in bands like Coldplay to Mumford & Sons. The song starts off with vocals, which are indicative of the motivational vibe that you are in store for. He sings, “I’m on my way, / I’m on my way.” Before you know it the band cymbals are crashing with soaring vocals and guitars. The next track “New Suns” is a little more fun and lighter than the opener. It’s almost too catchy and sunny at times while also being quite a danceable song. “Young Tigers” is another solid track. This time around the electronic drums, percussive elements and synths support the vocals. It’s another song that doesn't have any problem finding a hook. “Love, Youth & Glory” was a personal favorite that veered towards rock bands like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand. I thought the vocals during the verse were especially effective and thought the deliver sounded natural and relaxed. The last girth-y track is “Heartless Come Around” which is arguably the most hopeful and optimistic the band sounds. They close with an “outro” which actually felt unnecessary. Cross and Basnight aren’t the first and aren’t the last to attempt this style of music. Whether or not they can reach the level of official pop stars is yet to be determined.
