From the ashes of Seconds from Yesterday was formed Broken Trust. The three-piece band comprised of Jared Hill, Zach Pegg and Justin Alexander recently released their debut EP entitled Liars. The six-song EP could fit fairly snug into the category of alternative. Liars is a no frills EP that revolves around the classic setup of vocals, guitar, bass and drums. There is nothing particularly genre-bending about Liars but the songs are still well written and enjoyable.
The EP opens with “Those Words” which comes out of the gate with an intense barrage of instrumentation. The band takes their foot off the gas fairly fast by going into a verse with clean guitar picking. That doesn’t last too long either as the band gets to an explosive chorus within the first minute. The point I’m getting at it is that the song is quite dynamic. ”Those Words” seems to be about feeling isolated in a relationship full of lies. The vocalist sings, “even if I had stayed home, you would still feel on your own, nothing else would change.” As the EP progresses similar themes of isolation and loneliness occur. The mistrust the vocalist sings about on “Those Words” continues on “Liars.” “Liars” might be the most single worthy song of the batch. It’s catchy, immediate and contains memorable melodies. “The Answer” is one of the hard-hitting songs on the EP that goes into metal territory. The lead guitar work is impressive on this song. “Worlds Apart” has a mainstream viability that feels fairly predictable while “Beating the Fakes Down” reinforces the theme of feeling alone. “Before You Go” is the reflective and hopeful song that nicely wraps things up. Lairs is a consistent batch of songs that seems destined to appeal to a ubiquitous, mainstream type of audience. You have heard this style before if you listen to FM rock radio and Broken Trust perfected a structure that has proven to resonate with a lot of people. Liars isn’t a record that you have to spend too much time with to know if it’s for you.
