self-released; 2014

3.7 out of 5

Thank you Busto Power Trio for making music that I can listen to while solving local mysteries around the neighborhood. As soon I started listening to their debut EP The Deal I started geeking out as they found a formula which perfectly combines surf rock and David Lynch noir-like jazz. The music these guys play might not make you cry or have the emotional weight of a Sigur Ros album but it is a finely, tuned niche, which is fun exploring on its own merit. As they say on their Bandcamp page this is music for super villains.

The Deal is an instrumental album (with a couple of shouts here and there) revolving around silky guitars, walking bass lines and dynamic drumming. My attention didn't focus on one particular instrument but would wander most of the time because they all were doing something interesting.

The album opens up with “Salutation,” which is pretty much a lone guitar with the horribly underutilized whammy bar. I love the whammy bar and I’m glad to see it being put to such good use. Busty Power Trio gets down to business with “Negotiating.” I closed my eyes and imagined a car chase involving Rocky and Bullwinkle. “The Deal” will make you snap your fingers and pull out a smoke while “POV’ has an ominous atmosphere and one of the best basslines you will find on the EP.

“Oroboro” is a fun song that gets faster and faster in tempo until it gets to a boiling point. This song veers more towards surf rock and even ska. It also benefits from strategically placed vocal samples and shouts. They close with “Private Eye, Public Bowels,” which is as thematic as anything else on the album. The noir vibe is in full effect.

The Deal has a unique sound and it was a fun, ride from beginning to end. They really pull off what they were trying to do with this effort.
