Cakeface is a band from London, Ontario comprised of Joshua Grossi (vocals/guitar), Nick DiSalvia (guitar) and Owen Walker (drums/vocals). They recently released a five-song EP entitled Take It or Leave It that fans of hard rock should greatly appreciate.
The band get going with “Carnal.” You are greeted with a heavy drum beat that is quickly joined by guitar and bass. They really don’t waste much time displaying how dynamic of a band they are. The verse contains palm muted guitar which blossoms into an onslaught of energy. Bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains come to mind.
They continue to slay with “Purple.” The initial scream reminded me of Guns N Roses and in particular Axl Rose at the beginning of “Welcome to The Jungle.” In fact this entire song has more of an early ’90s vibe to me. There is a lot of attitude to appreciate.
The title track “Take It or Leave It” is the arguable highlight of the batch. The chorus in particular has a memorable quality that you want to sing along with. On top of the killer breakdown around the two-and-a-half-minute mark, the song contains outstanding guitar work and one of the best builds in recent memory.
“Kandi Lake” is a heavy mix of metal and hard rock. There are moments here which lean towards doom metal. It’s really dark and oh man that lead guitar is just so unforgiving. There are some classic lines “like “forgive me father I have sinned.” The energy of the closer “Phantom” is fast and fun. It sounded like a cross between Motörhead and Marilyn Manson to my ears.
There is nothing not to like here for fans of rock with some attitude. On top of that, the production is top notch. Recommended.
