You may not have heard of the name Cathy Heller but you may have heard her music. She started a licensing agency called Catch the Moon Music which has licensed her songs and others to plenty of companies looking for quality music. She has gone on to be a key speaker about licensing and even teaches master classes on the subject.
She just released a collection of songs called Glow which feels like some of the most motivational music I’ve ever heard. A simple glance at the song titles and you can get an idea of how unrelentingly upbeat and positive her music is. Songs like “GOOD GOOD FEELING” and “NOTHING BETTER THAN US TOGETHER” are just as optimistic and exuberant as they sound.
The title track “GLOW” starts with a hint of melancholy but is quickly taken over by triumphant sound and lyrics that mimic what you might hear at a Tony Robbins seminar. She sings, “ So just keep on / One foot in front of the other / When you're losing hope when it gets too hard don't let the fear pull you under. You're so much braver and stronger than you know.” It’s these type of platitudes that Heller embraces throughout GLOW.
“This Is The Moment” is a song that doesn’t embrace a single ounce or melancholy or negativity. She sings about not being held down by anything and goes into a catchy chorus. “GOOD GOOD FEELING” sounds like it could be a song in a Disney kids movie. Maybe she licensed the song to them.
The highlight was “Feel The Freedom” which still has the same unabated vibe like everything is awesome. I thought the verse was especially catchy on this song. It reminded me of Feist at points.
After listening to Heller’s music it makes a lot of sense why her music is licensed to companies like McDonald's and Walmart. These companies and society as a whole paint an idea that it's odd to experience or embrace emotions likes sadness, guilt, anger, etc. Their billboards smile at you and the music they want to represent their brand does as well.
Life is more than just trying to experience an endless succession of positive emotions and good feelings. In fact the more you try to be in a blissful state all the time the more elusive it will be. Being able to embrace and even appreciate negative emotions grants us the ability to realize what our happiness and joy is.
Glow is an album that mirrors a lot of the positivity that we see in western culture and for the most the most part I think that's a good thing. Overcoming negativity and preserving is vital in a world that can very easily bring you down. Just remember there is nothing wrong with feeling sad from time to time.
