Inspired to produce music in spite of the pandemic lockdown, American singer/songwriter/violinist/mandolinist Chris Murphy invited more than 30 guest musicians near and far to collaborate on this unique mixed-genre recording entitled Sovereign. I’m familiar with Murphy’s previous music and this isn’t that much of a stretch from his previous releases. The song still mixes elements of Americana, country, pop, rock and folk.
One of the first songs that caught my attention was “Boxed In” which is wonderfully fun and vibrant. It’s the type of song that will make you get out of your chair and do a knee slapping type of dance.
I loved the more Celtic sounding title track “Sovereign” which sounded a bit like music you might hear on the series Game of Thrones. The old rag time “Done with Diance” was also fantastic which is playful, lighthearted and even a little humorous.
“Till the World Lifts Its Head Again” is a forward moving song with hopeful sentiment while the bluegrass infused “Pear Blossom” sounds as organic and natural as homemade apple pie. There are some other standouts such as “Three Feet Deep” which has a killer groove which is hard to define but has some attitude and is more rock based. I wouldn’t miss out on the Bossa nova inspired “Never the Same.”
Murphy has been a professional musician for decades and this release is simply another testament to that. He sounds extremely comfortable in knowing what he wants to create and that comes across in the music.
This is a fine collection of songs that gets my two thumbs up. Recommended.
