Electronic music, traditionally, tends to evoke images of gleaming chrome and endless expanses of concrete and asphalt, due to its roots in urban cityscapes such as Detroit, Chicago, and Berlin. Or else it conjures images of classic retro science-fiction, from the levitating high rises of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, or psychoactive journeys such as the czech animated film Fantastic Planet or the weird kitchen sink melodramas of vintage Doctor Who.
D Fret, from the Argentine producer Cielo Pordomingo, layers this SF imagery over scenes from the Patagonian Desert, conjuring images of anti-gravity guachos rustling cybernetic cattle, by mingling techno synths and electro beats with traditional Argentine rhythms. The overall effect is at once futuristic and timeless; avant-garde, but rooted in traditionalism. It's an effective mix, with something for everybody, particularly people who feel that techno can be a bit faceless, repetitive, and redundant. Cielo Pordomingo accompanies these interesting, colorful sonic tapestries with a lovely voice, singing songs of passion and longing, making D Fret more human and relatable still. If there were to be a VR application of the Argentine desert, D Fret would be a fitting soundtrack. If you are looking to tango in deep space, this is for you. Cielo Pordomingo has an impressive pedigree, studying piano and music theory at the Coversavatory in Buenos Aires, and winning numerous awards. If only every electronic musician were as technically accomplished, perhaps dance music wouldn't be so anonymous and generic. And if only every classical and folk musician were as futuristic and forward thinking, both genres wouldn't be so mired in deadly nostalgia. D Fret is truly a melding of both worlds - classical and populist, technically proficient while still working as top shelf pop music. Prepare to dance the night away beneath fluorescent stars! Highest possible recommendation.
