Cielo Pordomingo has been prolific since her 2013 debut album D FRET. Since then she also released her sophomore album FUGALINE as well as R-MIXES & +. Her latest MOIRAI continues to blend genres as well as elements into her own signature sound. There is a delicate balance between orchestral and electronic elements. I have said before that there are some similarities to Bjork and that hasn’t changed.
The album gets going with “Azul Delirio.” The music is a mix of warping fuzz bass, percussion elements and synths. The production is inventive and is certified headphone music. That being said Pordomingo’s vocals are the main draw. Her vocals are smooth but powerful and dynamic. I sometimes thought of the Portuguese band Madredeus. There is a good mix of energy spread throughout the album. Take for instance the more dance heavy “Tiempo Irreal.” As much as I like these beat heavy tracks I tend to embrace the experimentation and soundscapes even more. One of the highlights was “Dunas” which has a magical sound that blends angelic pads with orchestral strings. When the beat drops there is even more instrumentation and a truly intoxicating amount of sounds to get lost in. Another highlight to my ears was “Moirai.” This song is more of a slow burn and one of the songs that are sung in English. The song is simultaneously serene and dissonant at times. “Blaring Look” is absolute fun and one of the catchiest songs on the album. The vocal is hypnotic. As the album progresses I felt there were some highlights including “Gift Card” which mixes elements like sub bass hits, orchestration, pads and even a synth that sounds like a theremin. “Lunático” has one of the more unique beats with more vocals melodies that were infectious. The closer “Warm” is arguably the most beautiful sounding song on the album. If you were already a fan of Cielo Pordomingo MOIRAI will make you a bigger fan. And if this is your first time hearing of her this album is a good place to start.
