Remix albums are a tough one. I’ll be upfront the remix albums I have heard over the years usually for whatever reason don’t hold up to the original. On rare occasions I will find individual songs that seem to find their home with a remix. R-MIXES & + by Cielo Pordomingo is one of the few remix albums I was able to appreciate especially being familiar with her previous album Fugaline and D FRET which is where the songs were selected from. I would say the songs felt like a lateral move. They were just approached in a different way. On that note there were some songs that stood out to me.
“Sin Sentido - Diego Ortega Septien Remix” was gorgeous and sparkles with classical composition and Bjork-esque style production elements. The song builds seamlessly with organic and electronic instrumentation.
“Something Changes” has some inspired moments as well. I especially gravitated towards the more dissonant multilayered semi-tones that get introduced a little after the two-minute mark. The beat hits hard with authority. “Green Drop - Cielo Pordomingo Remix” creates an ethereal soundscape that is airy and atmospheric. The song has a dreamlike quality that is easy to get wrapped up in.
“Pequeño Mundo - Miguel del Moral Remix” was very unique sounding and had jazzy overtones with avant garde sensibilities. “Don´t Sleep - Cielo Pordomingo Remix” is a club thumper in a cloud while “Caída Libre - Tiny Bars of Soap Remix” is a majestic soundscape filled to the brim with lush elements. The album closes with “Quieta - Cielo Pordomingo Remix” which is an edgy, neo-futuristic sounding piece.
Similar to other remix albums the songs sound like individual efforts with less thought on the unifying elements throughout. This is bound to happen if different artists are remixing your songs.
R-MIXES & + is a no brainer if you are already familiar with Pordomingo’s work and even if you aren’t I would invest time in getting to know what this artist offers.
