4.0 out of 5 - TOP ALBUM

By Ted Rogen

Forming in 2008 Coastline Pilot is a four-piece rock band from Vancouver, BC comprised of Thomas Tesan, Leo Tesan, Chad Devlin and Connor Morley. They recently released their second EP entitled In Search of New Land, which is a wonderful slice of power pop done right. The album embodies the idea of a summertime pop that will unequivocally boost your serotonin levels making everything seem ok even if it isn't.

In Search of New Land
really has it all in terms of what you look for in a pop album. The instrumentation is almost as infectious as the melodically driven vocals. That being said, the vocals are superb on this album. A number of times I was reminded of Fountains of Wayne while the vocal harmonies were reminiscent of The Beach Boys.

Coastline Pilot took no shortcuts with the production and quality of the recording. They ended up recording at three professional studios and the proof is in the pudding. The songs are radio ready and I was especially impressed by the vocal treatment.

The album starts off with one of the many highlights entitled “All I Can Get.” After my first listen I was already addicted to the melodies the band brings to the table. This song is especially poppy and breezy with an overt summertime vibe. The Beach Boy style vocal harmonies on the chorus were the high point.

The next four songs on the EP don't disappoint. "Afterhours" revolves around lost love, which created an intriguing dichotomy against the hopeful music. The song offers a number of exceptional moments and welcome surprises like a section where the music is put through some kind of filter and the unique guitar solo.

"From The Vine" has a dash of Americana and folk that mixes well with the band’s pop sensibilities while "Van Morrisey" is a bright song that bursts with optimism and energy. The band closes with "Sail On," which contains a good balance of hope and melancholy.

There is no reason you shouldn't be listening to
In Search of New Land by this point. The band really brings the goods and I think the band has what it takes to reach a wide audience.
