Comet Morehouse is the indie rock recording project of Minneapolis based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vinny O. He has used this moniker through thick and thin as a solo artist and as a band. Deadbeat Boy is his latest release and is a three-song EP.
The first song is entitled “Lost in You” and is the most indie pop sounding song in the batch. There is a lot of levity in the song between the airy synths and the vocals. The song has a bit of an early Pavement vibe with the vocals having this affable slacker like quality. That being said there is a good amount of energy provided by the drums and the chorus effectively explodes with the right burst of energy. I really liked this song and it reminded me of when indie rock was in its prime.
“Home Town Ghost” showcases a different approach. The song starts with a couple of acoustic guitars, organ and vocals. Morehouse pulls off this more melancholy and nostalgic type of sound. The thing I really loved about the song was how the energy picked up subtlety with drums. It’s reflective but it is done well and doesn't feel the least bit sappy. I think my favorite lines were “And Taco Johns / Doesn’t taste the way it should / These notes sound wrong / Were my favorite records ever really good?” That being said I know the exact feeling he is talking about when he sings “Look, there's another store / That wasn't there when I was.” I’m old enough to have this happen in multiple cities.
Morehouse goes three for three with “B.M.S." The music is again nostalgic and melancholy however this time he is singing about coming of age young love. You know that summer before college starts type of thing that is the premise of plenty of great movies.
Morehouse does a good job painting the somewhat standard suburban experience young people have been experiencing that actually hasn’t changed all that much from the ’60s and ’70s. The songs are relatable and more importantly really well written. Recommended.
