Cosmo Doris is the solo project of Dylan Hendrick who hails from Belleville, Ontario. After six years of writing, he’s finally finished his latest album Boi Womyn Man Gyrl. It was a lengthy process of writing and rewriting, but it was worth the additional effort. After so much time spent fretting over each song from the confines of his apartment, I think Hendrick has created something really special here.

Hendrick’s twelve-track album entitled ‘Boi Womyn Man Gyrl’ opens with the electrifying “Stoned Together.” This piece of psychedelic insanity certainly lives up to its title, as it’s a mad track driven by crashing drum cymbals and digital, otherworldly, distorted guitar solos which morph and blend into video-game-esque synth arpeggios. Reverberating vocals swoop and glide above the rest of the soothing, melodic, noisy ear candy.

The slower pace of “Sit Like A Mountain” was unexpected, but the booming drums, warped vocal effects, fluctuating synthetic madness and whatever else was happening in this piece of psych-electro-rock were all entirely welcome. It’s Hendrick’s crooning falsetto and indie-styled vocals which really sold this great track to me. It was more of a dance track than the psychedelic, lackadaisical opener, but I found the melody and singing to be even more emotive and powerful.

“Girls” was another fun, upbeat, absolutely bonkers track from Hendrick. Once again, everything was entirely unexpected, but entirely captivating. A jolly, yet melancholic piano chord progression, fighting to be heard atop fuzzy distortion, explosive drumming and elongated vocals, really drives this track. I found the unique style to be refreshing in a sea of overly-similar indie musicians. I felt as if Grizzly Bear and Foster the People had birthed a wonderful, but entirely individual, child.

I could talk about every single track in depth, but the best piece of advice I could offer is that you listen to this album for yourself. I review a lot of talented people on here, and you can add this one to the pile.

Dylan, where is the list of your music? I am so blown away by your heard and unheard sound. There are a few I resonate to. Trying to show them off. Is there a link to each? Aunt Niki.
