Cost of Attrition is a duo consisting of Wheeler Castaneda and Joshua Grow. They are from Indiana and recently released There You Go which is a three-song EP that evokes distorted power chords, vocals, and drums. It reminded me of a leftover ’90s power pop band like Weezer at it’s best.
Castaneda doesn't exactly have a voice that makes you think “this guy has a great voice.” He has a high pitched nasally voice and it was hard to understand anything he was singing. The instrumentation and songwriting is basic stuff. That's not a bad thing but it consisted mostly of strummed major and minor chords. The band opens with “Not Your Psycho.” It starts with a pick scrape and immediately launches into a distorted guitar riff and drums. The song is fairly catchy but I had a hard time appreciating the vocals which are the focal point of the song. Up next is “Oh Yeah” which sounded like it could be a Weezer B-side. I thought the song was a little more aesthetically pleasing than “Not Your Psycho.” The overall flow works well and the vocal harmonies really enhance certain parts. I thought the highlight was “There You Go.” Castaneda has his best moments as a vocalist on this song. The verse is especially strong and has the some picking guitar parts which I wish there were more of. There You Go is far from perfect but it is still fairly enjoyable. The best thing they have going for them is that they are catchy and the production is solid despite the missing bass. After skimming their Facebook page it seems like these are two pretty likable fellas who would be hard not to support. I like the attitude; I like their spirit but I still think there is some tweaking and refining they can do in the music department.
