Mathew O'Callaghan (vocals/guitar) Adrian Cross (guitar) Jon Isaac (Bass) and Stuart Macpherson (Drums) are a band from Australia who recently released a four song EP entitled Wiretap. Crooked Frames is a rock band though and through but their best moments were when they don’t play it safe.
It’s arguable that the opening track “Crooked Frames” is the highlight. I enjoyed the way the instruments coalesced and gave off a bit of surf/ L.A. Noire type vibe. The high energy detective/surf groove combined with catchy melodies, unconventional transitions and exceptional harmonies was a winning combination to my ears.
They follow that up with “Open Mic Night” which is another success. The guitars sound great and compliment each other in a unique way. It’s a steady, driving groove that was easy to appreciate. The band is also quite dynamic by rocking out more and more as the song progresses.
I liked “Heart Strings” although the chorus felt a little familiar here and more conventional. They close strong with “Private Citizen”. The song is almost seven minutes long but capitalizes on their strength.
Some of the breakdowns such as the one before the three minute mark were unexpected and engaging. It’s a roller coaster of song where the energy is all over the place. I will admit the piano ending seemed random and unnecessary. It didn't add much to the song because it felt completely separate.
I’d say the band is off to a great start with this debut. It's not perfect but are getting a lot of things right. Most importantly they are honing in on a sound that is about eight five percent there. Take a listen to this EP and keep an ear on them.
