The Worthing/Brighton band located in the southeast of England, known as Crown Beach, formed only a year ago, and by the sounds heard on their debut EP Lonely Paradise this quartet has some genuine solid grooves.
They have a mix of indie rock and alternative with a little throwback nod to some more classic sounds as well. The band consists of Luke Elder on vocals and lead guitar, Lewis Foord on rhythm guitar, Luke Taylor on bass and Lucas Biaz on drums. They take inspiration from bands such as The Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, The Stone Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kaiser Chiefs. Although their debut is short, it really packs a punch.
The haunting beginning of “Not Today” starts with just vocals and guitar and overall the tune has a really great live sound. The drum roll was fantastic inside a lively and well-done guitar solo. “Wonder” feels like it has a Chili Peppers influence with its funky rock style. The drums are warm and full and the drum fills are always something I can appreciate – Biaz plays them up good. The tempo speeds up towards the song’s ending which added another dimension.
I absolutely loved the guitar intro on “Waste of Time” and then a bit later, the low down bass and drums grooves. If you listen close, the lyrics have that sneering punk “screw the system” kind of attitude to them.
My favorite song was the EPs title track “Lonely Paradise.” I think Crown Beach really pushes the envelope well with an off beat that’s dance worthy, coupled with lively guitar riffs and hints of some classic and bluesy guitar sounds. It’s one of those songs that’s quite memorable and has all the elements of a great song. The ear-piercing ending was an added bonus, too. Overall, a solid debut.
