Lemon On Fire
self-released; 2014

By Eva Cantillo
With a name like Dad’s LPs, this band is emitting some down to earth music that you can imagine listening to while kicking it with dear old dad, just sitting back and letting the record spin. The sound of this four-piece band reminds me of classic alternative bands like Talking Heads and The Smiths. Dad’s LPs have been together for over a decade and Lemon on Fire is the band’s second full-length album.

Opening the album “Run Around” is a perfect song to get acquainted with the style of the band; it is soft and mellow while having a few sharp edges to really catch your attention. It begins with a dreamy chord and equally transcendental vocals before the beat and melody of the song kick in to take you on a sweet journey. This song seems to be a perfect pre-game song, to get hyped for the party; “I've got a pocket full of whiskey and I'm feeling right, I've got dancing feet and a rubber soul, I've got a feeling and a ticket to the show.”

The next song “Ain’t Over Yet” begins with a more upbeat chord and the sly and mysterious vocals say “I feel a rhythm while it’s burning in my head, it holds my body hostage, keeps me sweating in my bed,” sets the mood for this thriller. In between the high-energy vocals, we get a chance to dive into all the instruments that make up the band; the bass, guitar and drums really get this song going along with the “its all in my head” lyrics and it all makes this song a great one to listen to. In contrast, “Torn Apart” is a slow love song that harps about broken hearts; “we are torn apart from two sides of a single heart, I'm broken without your kiss.” This one is flowing and goes down smooth, I particularly enjoy the nice tapping sound of the guitar that gently keeps a steady beat in the background.

Songs found within Lemon on Fire are varied and make this collection of ten songs a great one to listen to with or without friends. There is skill in he songwriting and the recording quality of the album makes everything come through crisp and clean. This album is a winner for anyone into alternative rock or pop music.
