Plan A by David Joshua was a long time coming. Apparently the recording, mixing and mastering took almost ten years. It was accomplished in multiple sites which give each song a unique sound. Plan A mixes elements of rock, folk and alternative music. The songwriting is fairly conventional with nothing that felt experimental to my ears. Artists like U2 and Mumford & Sons came to mind.
He opens with “Amidst the Mystery” which opens with a contemplative sounding acoustic guitar progression. It rides that wave for the duration of the almost three-minute song and is an instrumental track.
“Arise” contains vocals and rocks out a lot more than the first track. In fact the song also contains heavy leads synth sand an intense bombardment of drums that also give it an electronic feel. Joshua has a thick voice and usually sings in a lower octave.
“Perfect Love” had a similar energy to a Mumford & Sons song although his vocals reminded me of Ian Curtis on the verse. The chorus on this song is one of the more memorable ones. Joshua wisely brings down the energy on the haunting “Edge of Destiny.” I really liked the lyrics on this track as well as how dynamic the song was.
“Lanterns” was perhaps my personal favorite song on the album. I thought he sounded like a mix between Johnny Cash and Elvis on the verse. There is a dark, reflective quality to the music. The chorus however gives the song a very different feel. The closer “Home” has similar vocal qualities to the previous song “Lanterns.”
You can tell that this EP was recorded at different places and I thought the drum sound could have used some improvements. Other than those minor issues Plan A displayed solid songwriting and delivery. Recommended.
