4.1 out of 5 - TOP ALBUM

By My Nguyen

Daykisser is an indie rock band based in Memphis, TN. Formed in 2017, the project is led by main songwriter Jesse Wilcox and also consists of Kenneth Piper (guitar), James Rose (bass/ vocals), Michael Todd (drums/vocals) and Peter Armstrong (keys/vocals). Daykisser is releasing their debut album entitled Selfhood.

A hybrid of alt-country and indie rock, Daykisser lists Wilco and Neil Young as their influences. And you can certainly hear their influences in their hazy and dreamy alt-country concoctions.

Selfhood
opens with “Dishes In The Sink,” where evocative strumming on the acoustic guitar starts off this track. The vocals are layered in reverb, creating a cavernous appeal. This song contains a country-bent appeal. The sounds of the xylophone create a trickling effect. The vocals are hazy and dreamy, offering up a haunting scope.

On “Roof Party,” deft strumming on the acoustic guitar starts off this track. Next, the long ranging twang of electric guitar demolishes. The vocals are spirited and upbeat. This is a catchy and melodic song with washes of hazy and ethereal melodies.

“Writing On The Wall” launches right from the get-go with a heavy melding of guitars, bass, drums and percussions. An unrelenting vibe comes from the wall of guitars. A fast drumming beat enlivens in the backdrop of this track. The song is energized with a fully charged appeal. A rush of colors and sounds.

On the closer “Find Somebody,” distinct noodling on the acoustic guitar starts off this song. The vocals come in distilled in reverb. The song has a soft lilt to it that makes it soothing. Next, a dramatic drumming beat struts in. The sound of lush strings rushes in offering up an evocative vibe.

Like coming home after a long journey, there is a sense of comfort to these effortless songs. A deep sense of solace permeates these tracks and listeners will find themselves going back to them again and again.

Driven by catchy and melodic hooks, Daykisser drums up dream-like compositions that are positively infectious. Such unique instrumentation like the xylophone gives off an unexpected turn. Selfhood is filled with such surprises. A startling record, these set of songs will grab listeners’ attention.

Harkening to a classic mellow rock n’ roll vibe, a lot of these tunes are influenced by classic rock. Rooted in glowing, golden vintage vibes as well as retaining a modernized twist,  Daykisser has a staunch approach to both worlds. Highlighting a vibe that audiences both young and old can appreciate, Selfhood is a timeless record.
