I think most of us will agree that Dead Coyote is a great name for a band. Zach Retzl (guitar/vocals), Jon Ventrella (drums/vocals) and Izabella Weiss (bass/vocals) are behind the magic and the recent release Feed The Raven.
The band is an amalgamation of a bunch of different genres like punk, garage rock and more. I felt like they had an original sound. The mood is sort of light and fun but also dark in an Alice Cooper type of way. I just got the feeling the band's main motivation was to have a good time and not take the music so seriously. I’m not sure if that was the intent but I loved it.
“Straight On Till Morning” is an intro for the most part that sounds like a swarm of locusts closing in on you. It's a very ominous sound but once the guitars hit it sounds like a mix between Sunn O))) and Spinal Tap.
“Peter Pan” is brilliant. The dissonant intro which leads to a garage rock 101 type riff is a load of fun. It’s catchy and slightly evil sounding but again it didn't feel emotionally heavy. The third song is “Revel Revel” and I became a full-fledged fan after this song. I’m not sure where to start. The infectious grooves, the melodies that stay with you long after they are gone or the anthemic line “rebel rebel rebel rebel romance uh oh same old” are all money.
“Susceptible” blends surf rock with menace and it's pretty incredible while “Echoes' 'clearly felt hyperbolic almost to the point of a Spinal Tap type delivery. They keep delivering with the spooky “What Happens at Night” which is a romp that could be in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The bass led “Goodbye Horses” felt more post-punk inspired. I think it was that Joy Division type bass line. They close with the energy fueled “Feed the Raven” which doesn't disappoint.
This band is wonderful. They just seem to get it. The band never gets melodramatic while providing some danger and a sense of rebellion in addition to being fun. Be still my heart.
