There’s not a whole lot of explanation needed for the band Deadblow. The band released a five- song EP entitled From The Ashes. Here’s what you need to know. Do you like ’80s metal with a little bit of attitude? Do you find yourself wanting more than just the same old albums by Poison and Mötley Crüe? Well if you answered yes then you just found your new favorite band.
The band isn’t doing anything innovative but they do play into those ’80s tropes that many people still appreciate. The vocalist has a voice that works for this genre and that’s literally about it. It’s not pretty but it’s not supposed to be. He delivers his words with an aggressive, indignant snarl. It works. The band is pretty tight. They stay in the pocket and sound good. Such evidence is on “She's the One” where the band rocks out with distorted power chords, a steady drum beat and a catchy chorus that reminded me of a little band you may have heard of called AC/DC. The band continues with “Why?” which tones down the direct metal vibe. The vocals aren’t as aggressive and the style veers towards early ’90s. It’s arguably the catchiest song on the EP. The band reverts to the ’80s metal sound with the more aggressive vocal delivery on “Phoenix Rising” and “Unmade Man.” I think it’s quite obvious to say that Deadblow is making music they grew up with rather than trying to push boundaries. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that but you will most likely be mimicking a lot of what already been done and also attract a fanbase that is relative to the same age range. Those are just facts that I've seen. For example, musicians who grew up listening to classic rock in the ’70’s will sound a lot like Led Zeppelin. I think From The Ashes will make an addition to your playlist between Van Halen and Poison. Recommended.
