Dénouement are Jonathan Fischer (vocals/guitar), Mike Reisser (bass/vocals), Marcus Carollo (guitar) and Brett DeFazio (percussion). The young band recorded a seven-song album entitled Algorithms. They play pretty straight hardcore punk. The band has some talent but also retread on a lot of tropes of the genre along the way.
The biggest issue with Algorithms is the production. This type of music really needs a certain type of production to be fully effective and Algorithms isn't quite there. To be blunt the energy of the music needs that studio magic that makes this type of music feel visceral and cathartic. The album starts with “Exitus” which contains synth and ambience. It’s an intro of sorts but isn’t really that indicative of what lies ahead. The band then launches into one of the highlights entitled “Jericho (Psalm 66:6).”.It’s catchy and features some pretty solid instrumental parts. Hopefully this song gets re-recorded at some point. The band has more success with “In Circles.” Shards of white noise cover this song as the band changes tempo. The song has a number of meaty hooks with interweaving vocals lines. The vocalist sings, “Am I just too much? / I’m not asking I’m imploring / I can see the view from the ledge.” Unfortunately ”Sink it In” is at least 3 dbs softer than the previous song. Its high energy, and the band lays it down. It was just hard to hear. Up next is “Drink Your Poison” which builds upon the band's strengths. They close with “Man or Monolith” which starts off with one of the coolest sounding riffs on the album. Dénouement is a band with potential. They still need to dig to find out how they can separate their sound a bit more. I hope to hear them back at it soon with hopefully a step up in the production.
