Dinny Skip is a young artist from New Orleans who recently released The Stabber Pad. On his Bandcamp page he states his music is “electronic pop with rapping, a sequenced horn section and lots of synthesizers.” Let's unpack that a little bit. The rapping is similar to the way Mike Patton from Faith No More used to rap not Andre 2000 from Outkast.
I’d actually say the funky bass is also familiar to Faith No More. The music is often thematic, striking and maximizing every inch of the frequency spectrum. For the most part the songs encompass a fun sometimes even humorous type of feel. I wouldn't say these are songs you would put on after a breakup but rather songs you enjoy more when you want to have fun and even feel a bit silly. That being said there is often a juxtaposition between the lyrics which are darker and less frivolous than I was expecting.
Up first is “About a Bot” which is about the protagonist building a robot that was basically going to be his girlfriend. The story actually felt quite depressing but you wouldn't expect it from the music which combines layers of synth, a kinetic beat and an overall type of sound that has some similarities to Gorillaz.
The aforementioned Faith No More is immediately recognizable on “Onspring Offspring.” Sprinkle in a dash of Red Hot Chili Peppers and you should have a good idea of what to expect with more synths.
“Hell Hooks” starts off with one hell of a line “Contortions or extortions from the disemboweled proportions.” There is a bit of a gothic, dark feel to this song. For some reason the image of Dracula kept on popping in my mind. The whole Dracula thing weirded me out once I heard the lyrics on “Just a Bite” which contains the lyrics “She’s got those long legs and that long hair / And I don’t care. I just want to bite you.” It was like I was predicting the next song before I heard it. Either way the song is extremely festive where I could imagine a huge choreographed production going on around it. He closes with “Swapping Spit” which I have to say sounds like a combination of Gorillaz and Eminem.
After looking at his instagram feed Dinny Skip seems like a young guy in his early twenties who is just getting started. The production is really good and although there are certainly influences you can point to I’d say he has a fairly original sound.
Overall, this is an impressive start from a new artist and I expect to hear more soon. Recommended.
