DP aka Domenic Petrella is a multi-instrumentalist based in Montreal who records instrumental music. His previous efforts most of which we have reviewed on this website focused on bass and had six songs. On his latest release FALLING Petrella not only nearly doubles his previous release by having eleven songs but by also puts the guitar in the forefront.
Petrella notes that FALLING was inspired by listening to The Cribs and Pavement. I don’t doubt this because you can hear it in the songs if you are familiar with those bands. Up first is “AWAY FROM HOME” which is a bright, summer jam that certainly sounds similar to early Pavement. To be specific Slanted and Enchanted and Wowee Zowee came to mind. It seemed obvious to me that “SALA ROSSA” was a tip of that hat to The Pixies and certainly a play on their album Surfa Rosa. The guitar bends will make you conjure up memories from a number of songs from “Monkey Gone To Heaven” to “I Bleed.” Some of the songs start to bleed into each other with “BELIEVE” and “MEMORIES” sounding interchangeable. This continues with songs like “WAITING FOR YOU” and “HAPPY TOGETHER” which have some impressive guitar parts but could almost be strung into one long song. Both songs also happen to be about the same length. One of the highlights was “LONG WALK TO NOWHERE” which was not only one of the most original tracks but I enjoyed the shoegaze like aesthetics of the song. Petrella closes with the self-titled song, which is another highlight amongst the batch. It’s refreshing to hear Petrella step out of his comfort zone and approach his music from a different standpoint. I can’t say I prefer it over the more bass heavy material he has released but it was nice to have a change of pace.
