Sometimes we need to listen to an album that speaks to and through our emotions, one that describes how we feel at any given point in our lives. Dustin Prinz’s full-length album ELEVEN does just that. Using his guitar and his voice, Prinz paints a vivid picture that has a color and brush stroke for everybody.
The songs take some stories of sadness and some stories of love lost, presenting them to the listener in a sweet and often upbeat package. For example, “Angry Breakup Song” sure sounds upbeat to be an angry song in tone; nonetheless, the actual lyric writing compensates and satisfies the expectation behind the song name – it’s the musical equivalent of masking anger behind an elevated voice.
In contrast, “Maybe” is a highly relatable song about love lost, and touches on all of the typical emotions felt regarding the ‘one that got away’. I really liked the instrumental portion of this song, especially the addition of what sounds like a xylophone; it adds a sense of nostalgia and thrusts the listener into a sort of dreamland.
The sweetly sung “Next Time You’ll Know” is a touch lighthearted, and seems to be the comforting cousin to many of the songs that precede it. The riffs that accompany the lyrics are appropriately complex. There’s a really smooth part in the middle of the song where he uses a softer and higher tone of voice and it sounds fantastic.
There are more facets to this album as well. “So Many So Deserving” featured a web of deep meanings, delivered both in the tangible content of the song and through the metaphorical meaning of the lyrics as applied to everyday life. “Northstar” is one of the sweetest love songs I’ve heard in some time, and would be a delightful dedication song to any special person in one’s life.
I liked Prinz’s soothing voice and unique guitar melodies, which came together so well to create one big cake of human emotion. It’s the kind of “sit back and reflect” album that could easily gain a place in the hearts of those who want their music to speak to them. Check this out for yourself and enjoy the story!
