Eamon Doyle is an independent musician in Los Angeles who recently released EP1. It’s a complete DIY effort and his genre is hard to pinpoint. It’s synth heavy pop which has production that at times sounds like elevator music. I say that in a good way but the programmed drums and piano in particular have this karaoke quality to it that somehow works.
Up first is “The Soft Glow of suburban Affluence” which had a lot going on maybe too much. The first thirty seconds is pretty engaging but also slightly chaotic sounding. His vocals took a little warming up to in a J Mascis type of way. I would say his voice fits this style well but he probably won't be winning a cappella singing competitions on shows like The Voice. “American Liberosis” is a quirky lounge song. It reminded me a bit of something you might hear from the band in Star Wars. That vibe is taken deeper on “Cartoon Monsters” which has a plastic, karaoke feel to it. The lyrics (what I could make of them) were fitting and unusual. Up next is “Birds of Paradise” which rocks in a bedroom producer type of way while “The Compassionate Sociopath” dabbles with casio type sounding instrumentation that combines with a more subdued vocal style comparable to Tom Waits. “The Compassionate Sociopath” may very well be the highlight. The best thing about Doyle is that the music is original and the EP is cohesive. Thats a huge one up on a lot of the competition. He definitely has his own vibe going on which I could get behind some of time. Other times I felt like I wanted organic instrumentation. There are some hooks but not many and they aren't obvious. I’m interested in where Doyle can take this. I think at the very least he builds a solid foundation and think with some concentration in some areas he could really come into his own.
