Eidetic Mind
self-released; 2015

3.5 out of 5

By Megan Gazzo

Eidetic Mind’s self-titled album Eidetic Mind is an imaginative instrumental piece. The music itself is symphonic and creamy. It feels like fireside magic. The heartbeat slowly pumping electric sounds make me feel like there are little glowing fireflies all around.

The way the music gently pulsates in and out with the bass and horn feel like the soft settle glow and fade of a firefly. The main singer’s voice is sharp and crystalline. He performs a deep open throated serenading sound occasionally, but more often provides a nasally sound like Perry from Janes Addiction.

The album opens with "Black Eyed Dream" where the loose elements and horns give it a noir feel. The song drops into magical "Politicians' Promise" which is a sensual yet poppy song. The lyrics are profound and glorious. The "Smoke in mirrors I catch them all by surprise" line in the first song is the epitome of this sound. The music is smokey and surprising.

"1981" reaches for nostalgia and ambiguity with the lyrics. He sings "All simplicity 's forgotten me I was right there in your arms Have I become too old or too big to hold The black sheep of this farm With this hipster generation Smiling back they mean no harm."

At times the music sounds to me like the band Morphine. At times I wished the main singer’s voice was deeper and raspier, but perhaps that would be too fitting. The fact that the main singer is nasally and an indie rocker brings a different facet to the jazzy, soothing pulsation that is his band. Not a lot of vocal range with him, but definitely he has a unique sound that sparks curiosity.

The song “Chaotic Play” puts it quite right. The band is cohesive and at times  Modest Mouse sounding. The main singer’s offshoot voice is the chaos. It takes a bit of getting used to. I really enjoy the instrumentation though.

This album is a chunky one having 12 tracks to mull over and explore through. Lots of dynamic sounds, but overall a cohesive down-tempo-ish love album with a sexy sound. Lots to look into here and for sure well put together. Great for a Hawaiian vacation.
