Emad Alaeddin has a long list of accomplishments. He was the first Arab to be nominated at the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2007, then won two songwriting awards in 2008. Apparently his single “Sunshine” received heavy rotation in MTV Arabia and was on the radio waves in Jordan. He even got coverage in Rolling Stone. His release Love, Loss, & the In-Between is a LP that is a complete DIY effort.
I can’t say I have listened to much middle eastern music. However I have listened to a wide array of western music. For the most part the music on Love, Loss, & the In-Between sounds indecipherable from western pop music in a lot of ways to my ears. I didn’t hear any eastern modes, the oud or anything that without my prior knowledge would indicate that this music came from the east. The only song on the album that would raise some suspicion that this wasn’t an American pop band was “Ma Tihtammi.”
The album opens with “Lucky Day” which is a palatable pop rock song. His vocals have a lot of stereo width and the guitars are relatively clean. The drums sounded too perfect to be live. Overall, a catchy song.
The next song “All My Lovin” is more pop than the opener. It actually reminded me of what many consider to be country pop these days. The song is predictable, enojayable and tailor made for non-offensive FM radio airwaves. “Wonderful Girl” reaches a couple of crescendos that would make people hold up the lighters as the world unites while “Forever” is straightforward rock. One of my personal favorites was “Face The Fight” which has a tinge of ’80s arena rock. I was digging the synth.
Love, Loss, & the In-Between fits into the American mainstream paradigm. There is just no denying that. If that's something you appreciate this will be right up your alley.
